The Future of Mental Health: Deconstructing the Mental Disorder Paradigm (Transaction Publishers , December 31, 2015)

The Future of Mental Health drills to the heart of the current mental health crisis, where hundreds of millions of individuals worldwide receive unwarranted “mental disorder diagnoses.” It paints a picture of how mental health providers can improve their practices to better serve individuals in distress and outlines necessary steps for a mental health revolution. Eric Maisel’s goal is to inject more human interaction into the therapeutic process.

Maisel (Season 1, Episode 153) powerfully deconstructs the “mental disorder” paradigm that is the foundation of current mental health practices. The author presents a revolutionary alternative, a “human experience”paradigm. He sheds a bright light on the differences between so-called “psychiatric medication”and mere chemicals with powerful effects, explains why the DSM-5 is silent on causes, silent on treatment, and wedded to illegitimate “symptom pictures.” Maisel describes powerful helping alternatives like communities of care, and explains why one day “human experience specialists” may replace current mental health professionals.

An important book for both service providers and service users, The Future of Mental Health brilliantly unmasks current mental health practices and goes an important step further: it describes what we are obliged to do in order to secure better mental health services—and better mental health—for everyone.

Life Purpose Boot Camp: The 8-Week Breakthrough Plan for Creating a Meaningful Life (New World Library, 2014)

As life gets busier and more complicated we crave something larger and more meaningful than just ticking another item off our to-do list. In the past, we’ve looked to religion or outside guidance for that sense of purpose, but today fewer people are fulfilled by traditional approaches to meaning.

Bestselling author, psychotherapist, and creativity coach, Eric Maisel (Season 1, Episode 153) offers an alternative: an eight-week intensive that breaks through barriers and offers insights for living each day with purpose. Once you understand how meaning operates, how meaning and life purpose are related, and what concrete steps you can take toward fulfilling your purpose, you will never run out of meaning again.

The program presented in Life Purpose Boot Camp: The 8-Week Breakthrough Plan for Creating a Meaningful Life will develop self-awareness and self-confidence and give you what you need to fully live the best possible life.

Season 1, Episode 152: Alex Kip – Coach, Speaker and Podcaster

Today’s guest is Alex Kip. Alex is a coach, a speaker, and a leader, and perhaps most important of all – a cancer survivor on a mission to help you find your purpose, live in love, and spread your light. After being told he had a 15-30% chance of surviving cancer, he knows how important it is to live fully NOW!

Alex teaches you to how overcome “unbeatable” odds in your life, business, and relationships. He believes that “Someday” is today, and the world needs your spark of light to cut through the darkness. And while that spark can bring you everything you need, too often we’re taught to be “realistic,” to do what’s safe, or to never give your heart away.

Alex say “F’ that! You only have this moment!”

He knows what it’s like to lose everything and to regret not living fully… fortunately for him, he got a second chance. And now he pays it forward as a coach, a leader, and the host of the podcast Soul Feed.

Season 1, Episode 151: Nick Pavlidis – Attorney, Author, Coach & Podcaster

Today, I am happy to introduce Nick Pavlidis. Nick is an attorney living outside of Boston, Massachusetts with his wife and two young kids. As if practicing law wasn’t enough, Nick writes, speaks, and coaches highly motivated men and women on taking personal responsibility for improving their relationships. He also helps entrepreneurs start and grow their businesses without leaving their families behind.

Nick’s first book, Confessions of a Terrible Husband: Lessons Learned from a Lumpy Couch takes you inside the mind (and house) of a terrible husband who thought he knew it all. Nick thought he had tried everything to improve his relationship, but nothing worked – including nights on that old couch.  Nick soon realized he was not only the problem in the relationship, but also the solution.

Nick’s story is honest, funny, and hopeful. Both husbands and wives will enjoy the process he undertook to become a more loving and engaged husband and father – a process you can explore to grow your relationship, too, no matter how great it already is.

In addition to his writing, Nick hosts two award-winning podcasts: Confessions of a Terrible Husband and Five Minutes With Dad (which he co-hosts with his six-year-old son and three-year-old daughter). He has an unusual fear of sofas and spends his free time helping people pronounce his last name.

You can find out more about Nick at www.ATerribleHusband.com and www.FiveMinutesWithDad.com.

Confessions of a Terrible Husband: Lessons Learned from a Lumpy Couch (Free Agent Press, 2015)

For years, Nick Pavlidis (Season 1, Episode 151) felt stuck.

He worked hard, believing he was doing what was best for his family. Over the years, the combination of long hours, unpredictable schedules, and a growing family took its toll.

Nick tried everything he could think of to improve his marriage, but nothing worked – including nights on that old couch. Nick soon realized he was not only the problem in the relationship, but also the solution.

In Confessions of a Terrible Husband: Lessons Learned from a Lumpy Couch, Nick takes you inside the mind (and house) of a husband who thought he knew it all.

Nick’s story is honest, funny, and hopeful. Both husbands and wives will enjoy the process he undertook to become a more loving and engaged husband and father – a process you can explore to grow your relationship, too, no matter how great it already is.

Season 1, Episode 150: Pain and Pleasure

In this topical content episode, Michael is joined by Heather Hans (Episodes 11, 24, 100 & 122) to delve into the topic of pain and pleasure. What motivates you? Are you driven by the carrot or the stick?

In this episode, we’ll dig into motivational factors that have as their root the avoidance of pain or the acquisition of pleasure. We’ll discuss:

  • Swinging to the extremes on the Pain/Pleasure spectrum
  • The fine (and sometimes blurred) line between the two
  • How pain (on the surface) can still be a source of pleasure (subconsciously)
  • The importance of finding what it is that really motivates us
  • …and more!

Heather is an internationally renowned visionary, healer and teacher, and the author of the book, The Heart of Self-Love: How to Radiate with Confidence.

This short guided meditation is a simple representation of how easy, yet important, it is to sit and meditate, even if you only have a few minutes, or feel that you are only capable of a few minutes.

Use this short session as a reminder when you are pressed for time, or use it as a daily practice to develop the habit of regular meditation.

Namaste.
